FA Cup’ll save Liverpool season – Coutinho

WINNING the FA Cup is the only way Liverpool can rescue its torrid season, according to Philippe Coutinho.

The Reds’ hopes of a top-four finish turned to dust after losing 4-1 at Arsenal on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers now has to focus his side on Wednesday’s FA Cup sixth-round replay against Blackburn at Anfield.

A semi-final against Aston Villa lies in wait if they can get past Rovers and Coutinho is keen to end the season on a high by lifting the trophy at Wembley in May.

“Winning the cup would save our season,” the Brazilian said. “It is very important for us to have that as an objective.

“We have to pick ourselves up after what happened against Arsenal to get the results that we need. We want to be in the Champions League. That is our primary objective. We have seven games left and we have to see what happens.”

Arsenal blitzed Liverpool with three quick-fire first-half goals from Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

Jordan Henderson pulled one back from the penalty spot but Olivier Giroud put the icing on the cake for the Gunners late on.

Coutinho believes the Merseysiders was just not at the races and failed to control the Gunners’ attacking talents as the team slipped further off the pace in the top-four race.

He said: “Arsenal played very well, as the team always do, and we did not do the things we have to do to win, the things we have done in previous games, like pressing the ball well.

“That was the difference between the two sides. It was a very difficult game but we have to pick our heads up and keep believing. We have to keep going. We have more games to come and lots of things can still happen.”
