Activities of the National Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) in sensitising women at the grassroots level on the importance of family planning have been commended by the Chief Nursing Officer of the Apata, Ibadan Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC), Funmi Iyimoga.

The health official of the community in Ibadan South-West Local Government area of Oyo State affirmed that the awareness created by the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) had now made the work of health officials easier.

Speaking at a family planning outreach programme organized by NURHI, where women were given the opportunity to ask questions on the health initiative, she disclosed that the efforts of the organization had raised the awareness bar of family planning to an enviable position.

According to her, “unlike in the past when health officials spent long hours explaining the benefits of family planning to interested women, these days, the women already know a lot about this and they just come to ascertain the method that would best suit them.

“Family planning had been before the coming of NURHI, but the organization, being supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation focused on training people at the grass roots level to achieve their target objects. Today, virtually everybody knows what family planning is all about, and this is a positive development for our people and I want to charge government to tap into the methods used by NURHI to achieve its aims,” she added.

In his remark at the event attended by large number of market women and others, an official of NURHI, Tunji Samuel, said that the project had now been taken to the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State for people there to benefit from it after the success of the initiative in Ibadan and other cities in the country.
