EU Condemnation Grows Over Russia Travel Ban

The European Union (EU) has continued to express displeasure at the recent move by Russia in which it announced an entry ban on 89 European politicians and military leaders, according to a report in Reuters. It is believed that the decision will worsen the frosty relationship between Russia and the West, with the crisis in Ukraine still a sore point.

The list, which the Russian foreign ministry compiled and handed to a European Union delegation in Moscow at the weekend, includes outspoken critics of Russia as, as well as U.S. citizens, a ministry official told Russian media.

Since Russia annexed the Crimean region of Ukraine in March 2014, the EU has imposed economic sanctions, visa bans and asset freezes on many of Russian and Ukrainian citizens and organisations.

Russia has repeatedly denied it is supporting pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. It is said that about 6,200 people have died in the fighting.

A spokeswoman for Britain’s Foreign Office said there was no justification for the travel ban.

Names on the list include Uwe Corsepius, secretary general of the European Union council in Brussels, who is due to take over as foreign affairs advisor to German Chancellor Angela Merkel; Bruno Le Roux, leader of President Francois Hollande’s Socialist Party in parliament; Britain’s former deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg; and former Prime Minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, who heads the Liberal group in the European parliament.
