Lagos – Nigerian champions, Enyimba of Aba, finally won a match in this year’s CAF Champions League after they overcame Group B leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, 3-1 in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

The match incidentally was the last group game of this season’s edition and marks the first time the two-time winners will earn a win in the round robbing stage.

Uche John got Enyimba to a good start in the 26th minute when he scored a beautiful free kick from the edge of their opponent’s box, which Sandilands in goal for Sundowns could not handle.

And the goalkeeper committed a big error at the dot of first half, which gifted Mfon Udo a goal to make it two for the Peoples Elephants. But before then, Sundowns’ Tau pounced on a loose ball to level things up in the 33rd minute.

Enyimba sealed victory in the 50th minute when Evans fouled Udoh in the vital area and the latter converted a spot kick, which stood and decided the encounter.

The result meant nothing for both sides as Sundowns have already qualified while Enyimba have regrettably been knocked out even before kicking the ball in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

With the result, Enyimba earned N3.69 million ($12,000) while Sundowns earned a paltry N.3m. A win in the round robbing stage earns a team $10,000 while it earns $1,000 for each goal scored.
