Chairman of Enugu South local government area, Hon. Victor Agbo, has been summoned by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in connection with the face-off between him and workers in the council over arrears of unpaid salaries and allowances.

The workers in Enugu South LGA had taken to the streets of Enugu metropolis on Wednesday to protest non-payment of six months arrears of salaries by the council.

Following the protest, Governor Ugwuanyi paid an unscheduled visit to Enugu South on Thursday morning.

During the visit, the Governor assured the workers that all their grievances would be looked into.

Ugwuanyi directed the council chairman and the Enugu South council leadership of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), to appear at Government House Enugu for the resolution of their differences.

Nonetheless, some of the workers who pleaded anonymity told Daily Independent that the excesses of the council boss have become unbearable to them.

The aggrieved workers alleged that from January till date, they have only been paid for the month of March and yet the Chairman claims he has cleared their six months arrears of salaries.

“We can no longer condone the conduct the conduct of the chairman. Anytime allocation comes, he leaves the country. When he returns, while waiting for another allocation, he obtains a loan from a bank. So, when the next allocation comes, the bank deducts the money, leaving the council with little or no money to pay salaries” our source said.

The council boss could not be reached for his reactions as at the time this report was filed yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State chapter of NULGE has given kudos to Governor Ugwuanyi for giving priority attention to the welfare of local government workers.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Daily Independent, the State Chairman of NULGE, Comrade Ken Ugwueze, said the union was fully in support of the staff audit commissioned by the Governor in all the 17 local government areas of the State.

Ugwueze said the staff audit, which the union had advocated for, would help fish out all the ghost workers in the councils and ensure that only genuine workers get their salaries at the end of every month.

“Last week, the Governor constituted an 11 man committee to sanitize the local government system. Our union is happy about this. He has done a marvelous thing. He said our salaries should be in first line charge. We thank him for that.  We intend to pay him a courtesy call soon to show appreciation” Ugwueze said.
