Enugu– Many of the fleeing prisoners who escaped from Nsukka Prisons on Tuesday night are yet to be re-arrested, prisons sources disclosed to Independent on Thursday.
Although, earlier information on the jailbreak indicated that around 15 prisoners escaped from the prison, our source said that the number of the runaway inmates might be higher than the figure reported.
Our source, however, said an intensive manhunt has been launched for the fleeing prisoners to make sure that they were re-arrested.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Mr. Isaiah Amariri, Comptroller of Enugu State Prisons, said prisons officials had re-arrested six inmates.
Amariri said the Enugu State Prison Service was liaising with other security agencies and community vigilante groups to ensure that the fleeing inmates who might be in their various communities were captured.
“We solicit for help from the public who may have information about the fleeing inmates to feel free to call prisons authorities or security agents to enable them to re-arrest the escapees.
“We promise that such information will be given the confidentiality it deserves and source identity will be fully protected,” he said.
