Lagos – The Enugu Golf club is dreaming of participating at the next Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
And to achieve this feat, the club plans to reposition through its grassroots programme.
Dr. A Uchenna Katchy, Captain of the Golf Section of the Enugu Sports Club, who disclosed this in a chat with Independent during the Inaugural Open Championship, said that to fast tract the process, a coaching clinic would be organised in schools to sensitise pupils and students.
According to the Captain, “One of the cardinal programmes of my tenure before it elapses is grassroots development. I discovered that the awareness in golf is very low in Enugu.
“We want to organise a coaching clinics at schools to sensitise the students and pupils; because I’m looking at the future and ensuring that Enugu produces at least, a golfer that will represent Nigeria at the next Olympics,” the Captain said.
In the same vein, he dwelled on the need to build on the existing structures put in place by his predecessor rather than commencing new ones as well as giving opportunities to women members.
“One of the things this present Board also intends to achieve is building on the structures on ground. The Club House is still not completed and there are other projects hanging.
“This board also has the credit and record of having more women in the board occupying good offices. For example, the Vice Captain, the Treasurer, the Women sub-section Captain just to mention a few,” he revealed.
