The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has written off the present crop of Super Eagles on the premise that the squad cannot face strong opposition.

According to him, the present team ‘is just an assemblage of players.’

Consequently, he said the team does not merit the tag ‘national team’.

Elegbeleye said on Monday in Abuja that  the crop of players currently putting on the national colours were not , in his opinion, qualified to put on the national jersey  considering their  relatively poor quality.

He said, “The players have not shown the character the Super Eagles is noted for,” and as such cannot be good ambassadors.

He observed that assembling 11 players to prosecute a match on behalf of the country does not make them a national team. A national team, he said, must depict the true character of the country it represents and must impress the fans, even if the team ends up losing the match in question.

“We do not have a national team yet, we are still in the process of rebuilding, the Super Eagles must be a team that Nigerians can be proud of at all times and not what we presently see. When you lose at home to Uganda and manage a draw against South Africa that does not represent a good result. When you gather 11 people on the field to play does not qualify them to be called a team.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), he however, assured was doing something about the issue of engaging a quality coach that would produce a quality Super Eagles.
