Moves by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to arraign Maj. Gen. Edet Akpan (rtd), a former Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for electoral offences have been stalled by a three day no court session in Akwa Ibom state judiciary.

Akpan, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was to be arraigned before a Uyo Chief Magistrate following his arrest by men of Directorate of State Services, Uyo on Tuesday. The retired Major General was arrested in his home town, Nsit Attai, during the April 11 Governorship/ House of Assembly election for allegedly snatching ballot boxes and other electoral materials from INEC officials.

He was also alleged to have abducted 10 corps members and compelled them to thumb print and fill result sheets in favour of a political party before men of DSS trailed and arrested him in his house.

However, INEC could not arraign the former NYSC Director General due to the ongoing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Multi- Door Court function holding simultaneously in the three senatorial districts of the state.

Nevertheless, INEC Legal Officer, Barr. Eze Emmanuel, who was at the court’s registry to file the case, said Akpan will be arraigned as soon as the court resumes from the three days ADR multi-door court function.

The former NYSC boss is being held in the custody of the Uyo command of the DSS.
