Lagos – Augustine Eguaveon, former Super Eagles captain and coach, has called on Nigerians to support whoever emerges as Super Eagles coach.
The former Enyimba of Aba handler spoke to Independent on Thursday against the backdrop of stiff opposition from the Bitrus Bewarang-led Nigerian Football Coaches Association on NFF’s choice of a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.
He said that even though he acknowledged the various reasons adduced by those calling for an indigenous coach for the national team, there was the need to support who the football house finally settles for.
“I personally would have loved to see one of our own coaching the Super Eagles but we should realize that those who will pay the coach have the right to bring in anybody.
“We as Nigerians should play our own part by supporting whoever the NFF chooses to coach the team because we cannot change their decision. Remember every kind-hearted Nigerian should support Eagles to qualify for the World Cup at this time,” Eguaveon said.
The NFF will on July 18 name the substantive coach for the Eagles among the trio of former interim manager, Salisu Yusuf, Belgian Saintfiet and Frenchman Paul Le Guen.
