The wives of some former governors have come under the searchlight of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as they have been invited to the commission to respond to some questions bordering on alleged corrupt practices.

Spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed this to Daily Independent in Abuja, on Wednesday, July 22, 2015.

Although he did not mention names, Uwujaren said: “I know that invitations have been extended to some former first ladies, but I don’t know the details.”

Another source at the EFCC who spoke based on trust, because he is not authorised to speak, disclosed that Toyin Saraki, wife of the Senate President and former governor of Kwara State, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, was among those invited for questioning by investigators of the commission.

The source disclosed that Mrs. Saraki’s offences border on alleged money laundering, and she may appear at the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja later this month to clear herself of all the allegations.

“You know we monitor how transactions are going on in banks. Our men are not comfortable how money keeps flowing into her accounts and they want to ask her the sources.

“She needs to only come and clear herself,” the source said.

The second former governor’s wife that has been invited by the EFCC, the source said, is the wife of former governor of Kebbi State, Saidu Dakingari.

According to the source, his wife, Mrs. Zaina Dakingari, would be questioned by EFCC investigators in connection with alleged corruption involving huge sums of money when her husband held sway as the governor of Kebbi State.
