Abuja – Adamu Adamu, Education Minister, and Folashade Yemi-Esan, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, on Tuesday differed on the sudden increase in tuition fees at the 104 federal Government-run unity schools across Nigeria.

While Adamu denied any increase in the tuition fees, Yemi-Esan said there was only a slight increase in view of the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

In a recent circular to parents pupils in unity schools, government said that fees had been shored up, by a 375 per cent increment, from N20,000 to N75,000.

However, the Education Minister claimed he was unaware of any increase when he spoke to journalists shortly after the launch of National Education Quality Assurance Handbook in Abuja on Tuesday.

Adamu also denied being part of the process to increase the fees in the schools.

“I am not aware that the unity schools’ tuition fees have been increased. I am the Minister of Education and I am not aware that the fees have been increased, but I will try to find out,” he said.

On her part, the Permanent Secretary, in an attempt to justify the increase, said, “Yes the school fees of the Federal Government unity schools have been increased, but not up to 300 per cent.

“You must be aware of the realities on ground, it is important for the Federal Government colleges to be able to maintain the students that have been admitted and you must also be aware that these schools are tuition-free. What really increased was the boarding fees.”
