Gideon Obhakhan, the Edo State Commissioner for Education, has disclaimed insinuations that the newly established Edo University, Iyamho in Etsako West Local Government Area, is owned by the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

In a chat in his office, the commissioner asserted that there has never been any controversy about the ownership of the institution, stressing that it is owned by the state government.

“Edo University, Iyamho, is the name of the school. So, why are people talking of ownership? What is their challenge?

“As the name implies it’s Edo University not Adams Aliu Oshiomhole University. Why are they not asking who owns the University of Benin? It (Edo University) is a state university and it remains so,” he stated.

He averred that the fact that the institution is cited in the home town of the governor does not mean it belongs to him.

The commissioner stressed that because the bill setting up the institution was adjusted on two or three occasions does not make it an invalid establishment.

Obhakhan disclosed that students are already on the campus and in no distant time the institution would hold its first matriculation ceremony.
