Edo Election Petition Tribunal Given 180 Days To Discharge All Petitions

Chairman of Edo State Election Petition Tribunal, Justice S. Anjo, on Friday called on Defence Counsel to be upright and diligent in the handling of election petitions before it to enable the Tribunal keep to the 180-day time frame stipulated for hearing all petitions.

Hon. Justice Anjo made the call on Friday at the inaugural sitting of the Tribunal, held at the Court of Appeal, venue of the sitting in Benin.

A total of 10 petitions were filled for hearing at the Tribunal. They are made up of two Senatorial, two House of Representatives and six House of Assembly petitions.

The Tribunal Chairman while expressing readiness of members of the panel to adjudicate all petitions relating to the elections, solicited assistance of members of the Bar to ease the work.

Responding on behalf of other Counsel, Barr. Abayomi Thomas, pledged the cooperation of members of the Bar to allow for the smooth-running of the Tribunal.

A notice at the Tribunal’s Secretary’s office indicated that the Tribunal will continue sitting at the Court of Appeal premises, pending the suspension of the industrial action that has kept the State High Courts under lock and keys till now.

Other members of the Tribunal are Justice I. A. Yusuf and Justice (Mrs.) A. M. Alli. End
