Edo Assembly Investigates Former Speaker’s Tenure

Benin – Edo State House of Assembly has commenced  investigations into the allegations of financial impropriety recorded between June 2015 and May 2016 during which Hon. Victor Edoror was Speaker of the House.

This followed presentation of interim report to the House for consideration by Hon. Emma Agbaje, Chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committees looking into the allegation.

While presenting the report, Hon. Emma Agbaje explained that it (the report) has lots of findings, which were arrived at after crosschecking figures and verifying documents relating to the expenditure profile within the period.

He however, lamented the committee’s inability to meet with the former Speaker on issues contained in the allegations recorded against him within his period he led the house.

The House Speaker, Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, charged the committee to explore all established avenues to get Hon. Victor Edoror to speak on the allegations against his tenure in office within the next two weeks.

She directed the committees on Rules, Business and Government House to slate consideration of the Report in two weeks’ time.

In the same vein, the House has commenced findings into a petition on the alleged use of police to harass rice leaf sellers at New Benin Market signed by Mr. Lucky Orukpe.

The Speaker referred the petition to the Committee on Public Petition for further legislative action.

Also during the plenary, the House, while observing July 11 as World Population Day, enjoined parents to invest in the training of the girl child to enable them face future challenges.

Hon. Ativie equally informed the House of its forthcoming attendance of the Joint Session of the South East, South South Houses of Assembly Sitting scheduled to hold in Owerri, the Imo State Capital and urged members concerned to take note.

Before adjourning, Hon. Justin Okonoboh , the Deputy Speaker, invited members to be part of the All Progressives Congress( APC ) Reconciliation and Reunion Party to chart the way forward for the party at Igueben Local Government Area.

Meanwhile, the Speaker earlier, addressed a procession of Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) , Edo State Chapter  ,who are clamouring for the domestication of the Bill on Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act in Edo State.

The Speaker assured the female lawyers of the House cooperation with necessary legislation on the protection of all gender against violence.

Hon. Ativie, while addressing Rice Leaf Traders under the umbrella of Traders’ Union of Nigeria assured them that their petition would be treated with utmost dispatch.
