Temidayo Akinsuyi,

Lagos- Comrade Peter Esele, a governorship aspirant under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state on Tuesday debunked rumours that he has withdrawn from the governorship election slated for September 10.   He however said he has suspended his campaign for a period of seven days.
There were reports that  Esele, a former president of the  Trade  Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) had suspended his campaign after reaching an agreement with the state governor, Adams  Oshiomhole who convinced him to support a particular candidate in exchange for the deputy governorship slot.
However speaking  in a chat with Independent,  Esele described the rumour as false, saying that he only suspended his campaign for seven days in honour of the late  Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Erediauwa who joined his ancestors last week.
I have not withdrawn from the governorship race. That is not true. I only suspended my campaign for seven days because of the death of Oba of  Benin. Ignore the rumour that I am no longer in the race” he said.
Esele also described as an insult, the rumour that he was gunning for the deputy governorship position in Edo State as against his wish to be the next governor.
Esele said if he had wanted to be a deputy governor, he would have reached out to any of the leading aspirants in the governorship race to negotiate.
“Do you know how many local governments I have visited and what I am going through right now? Do you know the number of sleepless nights I have had and the number of people I have met? You think I am doing these things because I want to become a deputy governor?
“That is an insult. If I want to become the deputy governor, I can reach out to whoever is the leading aspirant and negotiate and I will not need to waste the energy and resources that I am deploying now. If I want to become deputy governor, I know what to do” he said.
