Ebewele Cautions AFN Over Athletes, Coaches Engagement

Former Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) technical director, Brown Ebewele, has frowned over the wanton hiring of foreign athletes and coaches to run for the country.

Ebewele, a decathlete in his active days said, that the federation owes the local coaches and athletes a duty of engaging them in areas they have comparative advantage in athletics, than flood the whole place with foreigners that had contributed little to sports in the country.

“AFN has not got its priority right. In which country do you have a situation where qualified local athletes and coaches are abandoned in preference to foreigners?

“If Maurice Greene is a good coach the United States of America would not have left him unemployed, same goes for dozens of athletes AFN hired to run for Nigeria. Our coaches and athletes must be encouraged to take up challenging positions in the sports sector and progress on it. The current situation is frustratingly dehumanising.”

Ebewele, who was once sports commissioner in Edo state, noted that no country ever gives out its best athletes and coaches to other countries. Unfortunately, Nigeria sports administrators would brazenly hire those he described as expired coaches from others countries to coach Nigerian athletes.

“Nigeria sports professionals are dying for lack of jobs and people that felt they have the funds are busy flinging it away on things that would only distort the system.”
