Despite being grouped alongside host, Chile, USA and Croatia in group A, coach of the reigning U-17 World champions, Emmanuel Amuneke, has disclosed that winning the opening match against USA should be the team’s focus.

The team, which won the last edition of the competition in UAE in 2013 with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi and Musa Mohammed, will be hoping to defend the trophy as it faces USA on day 1 at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos on October 17, before confronting Chile and Croatia respectively.

With a not-too-impressive display at the CAF U-17 championship in Niger early this year, where the team finished third, Amuneke stressed that the team needs to concentrate on winning the first match against USA.

”If you want to be a champion, you must be ready to play every team that comes your way; our first game is against the USA and we must continue building our preparation towards that game.

“The most important thing for us now is to concentrate on the US game; in every World Cup, the first game is very important. You have to ensure you don’t lose and a win gives you confidence.

”Every team that has made it to the World Cup deserves some credit because they all worked very hard to be here,” he said.
