As part of efforts to engage youths positively towards curbing restiveness in Minna, Niger State, and its environs, a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), B Division, Paikoro Station, Sunday Osarollo, has donated trophies to some communities to organise a football tournament.

The tournament’s finals played over the weekend at the Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna, had eight communities, as well as police and vigilante teams participating.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the tournament Osarollo said that, “The essence of organising the tournament for some communities within my jurisdiction was borne out of my desire to meet up with our social responsibilities.

“We organised the football competition so that we can bring youths together and give them direction through sports promotion, else they will go astray.

“I believe keeping them busy in this manner will in one way discourage most of them from joining cults or bad groups.”

Osarollo also told journalists that the event was held in partnership with the DFID, which donated the jerseys and other kits used by the players.

Osarollo lamented the large number of talents that have remained untapped and urged football scouts from within and outside Nigeria to go back to the grassroots and shop for talents that abound there.
