Former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Sani Ahmed Toro, has condemned Nigerians ‘aspiring’ to the office of the President of FIFA on the premise that they were ridiculing the country before the international community.

Toro said that those who were vast in FIFA and its politics should assist to provide direction and halt ongoing charade in the media.

At best, he said that the exercise portrays the aspirants and the country in bad light and as a people who were lacking in rules or bent on subverting them.

The former Governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, and ex-Super Eagles captain, Segun Odegbami, have announced they are running for the FIFA top job.

Toro said: “I think it is important for some of us to speak up and not condone this charade. We are ridiculing ourselves. Relevant articles of FIFA regarding who may vie for FIFA President are there for people to read before coming out in public. Or is FIFA going to suspend its rules to accommodate our people? Toro queried.

Quoting Article 24(1) of FIFA, which deals on eligibility, Toro said that none of the aspirants was qualified to run for FIFA President.

Article 24 (1) of the FIFA Statutes states that only members may propose candidature for the Office of FIFA President.

“A Candidature for the Office of FIFA President shall only be valid if supported by a total of at least five (5) Members. Members must notify the FIFA General Secretariat at least four (4) months before the start of the Congress together with the declarations of support of at least five (5) members.

“Also, a candidate for the Office of FIFA President shall have played an active role in Association Football (e.g as a player or an official within FIFA, a Confederation or an Association, etc) for two (2) of the last five (5) years before being proposed as a candidate

He noted that, while Odegbami is a former player, he has not played any active role in Association football in the last two year, so also Orji Kalu.
