Nigerian political parties should be allowed to evolve on their own and to compete among themselves in a bid to stay afloat and maintain their registration status.

Advancing this position at the weekend, Hon. Yusuf Buba, the member representing Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency, Adamawa State, in the House of Representatives, has charged authorities not to streamline the number of registered political parties in the country.

Buba, in a chat with Independent in Yola at the weekend through his media aide, Mr Nkem Anyata, explained that the decision to streamline political parties in the country was unhealthy to democratic development.

The lawmaker was reacting to a Bill presented at the House of Representatives on Tuesday that sought to reduce the number of registered political parties in Nigeria to five.

He stated that instead of attempting to put a lid on the number of political parties there should be need for  deepening the electoral culture through voter education, sensitization and awareness.

According to Buba, “though the bill has just been presented before the House, there are many ways to render such bill  irreplaceable, and I am sure the bill will die a natural death.”
