Benin – Accord Party’s governorship candidate and former Managing Director of Daar Communications, Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, may find it difficult to participate in the September 10 governorship election following a court order.

The court order has bared the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting his name as candidate of the party until he gets a vacation judge to vacate it before the election.

Don Pedro was said to have been shocked when his name and the Accord Party he represents was not among the 19 names of candidates and political parties released by INEC.

Dr. Samson Isibor, leading one of the factions of the party as chairman, had reportedly secured a Federal High Court order on the last day required by INEC for political parties to submit names of their candidates and running mates.

Dr. Isibor had named Lawal Muhammad Nalado, Mr. Nureni Adisa, Don Pedro Obaseki and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants in the suit.

Don Pedro in an interview with our reporter said he was not aware of the suit until INEC was served the injunction granted by the court, adding that he could not get a counter order because courts have gone on recess till September.

He said the party has begun a search for a vacation judge that would hear the defendants’ argument and vacate the order, saying that “paid apologists have taken me and INEC to court and they got a court order to stop me from running. INEC in obedience to the court order has not published my name”.

“Yet, I can’t get a counter order as the courts have gone on recess till September. Is this fair? Is this the fate of our state? Who is afraid of an ordinary man who dares to dream?”
