Dogara Promises Access To Parliamentary Activities

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara has challenged the 8th Assembly members to brace up to the code of conduct that would guide their conduct.  He has also assured Nigerians of accessibility to all parliamentary activities during the lifespan of the 8th Assembly.

Speaking at the inaugurating  of the code of conduct ad-hoc committees yesterday, the speaker said  the Committees has been put together to fashion out a Code of Conduct document that members would subject themselves to in the 8th House of Representatives.

According to him, the committee’s functions would be to carry out the formulation of a Code Conduct Document to guide members of the House. Incorporate by reference of the Code of Conduct Document, part of the Rules of the House as well as carrying out all the functions of the Standing Committee on Ethics and Privileges pending the constitution of the Standing Committee.

Other areas include constitution of the Standing Committee, recommendation of amendments to aspects of the constitution of the Standing Committee, ensuring that members demonstrate high standards of ethics consistent with the important roles of law making, representation and oversight of the executive branch of government

He said that the committee would also among other thing deter and sanction specific cases of unethical behaviour by members in the broader context of preventing and fighting corruption such as conflict of interest issues, transparency and disclosure of interest on matters before the House.

The committee was also charged to work out ways that would enhance the level of trust by the general public in the political system in general, and in parliaments and their members in particular, which will contribute to improving the status and image of the Legislature in Nigeria, implement the provisions of Article 8 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which provides for the development of ‘Codes of Conduct for Public Official.
