Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike

ABUJA – The deplorable state of affairs in Nasarawa State’s health sector has taken an awful twist as health workers in the state embarked on an indefinite strike over salaries. The state is finding it difficult to pay backlog of salary arrears and pension since the dip in state allocation from the federal government. Yet, like their counterparts in some other states, the workers would have none of the complaints thus embarking on industrial action.

The health workers under the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had issued a one-week strike notice to the state government on May 26. The state government’s failure to meet their demands led to the strike, according to Dr Friday Omolei, who is the chairman of the state chapter of the

NMA. He was joined by the union Secretary, Dr Peter Attah in announcing the strike action. The health unionists specifically accused the state government of failing to correct their salaries as provided for in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
