Lagos – The seemingly disharmony between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)over the appointment of a n expatriate coach for the Super Eagles can derail the country’s hope of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
Consequently, the Federal Government and the NFF have been urged to work harmoniously “if Nigeria is to qualify for the World Cup.”
Adegboye Onigbinde, former Super Eagles coach, who spoke against the backdrop of the disagreement between the Sports Ministry and the NFF, said that they can only agree for the game to move forward.
Onigbinde said both sides might be right depending on their arguments, but insisted that there must be an agreement so that preparations for the qualifiers will begin in earnest.
“When they disagree, the football will suffer. Whether it is a foreign coach or a Nigerian coach, they should just agree and hire one fast before other countries will be ahead of us in preparations.
“I don’t know when Nigeria will start getting it right. The qualifiers are just few months away and we are still here arguing over foreign or a Nigerian coach.
“But the colour of the coach does not matter. Nigerian coaches can qualify Nigeria for the World Cup; we have done it before and we can still do it again. What matters is the kind of cooperation given to him. If you give Nigerian coach all the cooperation, he will qualify Nigeria for the World Cup.
“So they should come together and ask themselves who Nigeria needs to qualify and go for that,” he said.
Nigeria are in Group B with Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia, and will start the campaign against the Southern African country in October.
