On October 1, Nigeria turned 56 and since 1960 that we gained independence from colonial masters, it appears that 2016 was the first time many witnessed a low key celebration at the federal level because of the recession the country is facing.

Many families lived through the Independence Day like every other normal day with the belief that there was nothing to celebrate, while majority did not remember it was Independence Day. Unlike previous Independence Day celebrations, a handful flew the Nigerian colours.

Even though it was a gloomy celebration, many enthusiastic youth stayed positive. A few supermodels and beauty queens maintained their stylish personality. They went to the studios and became creative with Nigerian colours, Green-White-Green. They did not only look breathtaking and dramatic in Nigerian colours, they had inspirational messages to other young people who may have given up on Nigeria because of the situation:

Organiser of Mr & Miss Fashion Nigeria, Michy Okafor
“Recession in Nigeria may be an unwelcome development, but it is not unexpected. Nigeria will smile again.”
Winner of Most Elegant Girl in Nigeria 2015, Mistura Ademoye
“I still believe in Nigeria. Rather than the blame game, let us the young people show examples by leading people in the right direction. Be the change agent in your own world, ensuring we correct every form of impunity. We should invest in training our young people, providing the right platform for growth and development and let’s bring back our family values. Above all, in God we trust. Nigeria will be great; God bless Nigeria!”

Mr Tourism Nigeria 2016, Umeh Kingsley
“Nigeria in recession is not funny. But we certainly know we would come out of it victorious, God willing. So rather than we casting blames and throwing punches at one another, let’s join hands together and pray for Nigeria! She needs our prayers.”

Super Model: Ilechukwu Onyinye had this to say about Nigeria At 56
“NIGERIA! My pride, my nation. Giant of Africa. World’s Most Happiest People. Nigeria is a Nation with the highest number of Indigenous Languages.
A Nation Blessed With Diverse Cultures and Beliefs … MY NIGERIA,
For The Love of a Young Nation, Let’s Build a Formidable Passion for Our Country Nigeria; A country our Children Yet unborn will be Proud of. A nation filled with Peace, United in Diversity, Progress in spite of The Economic Challenges… My Nigeria, My Passion.
Also, concerning this recession, it is not easy but I strongly believe there is a big light waiting for us all at the end of the tunnel… Let’s stay strong Naija….”

Iheanacho Cynthia
“I Love My Country, no one will build my home for me. I choose to take responsibility in building my country.
I encourage every citizen of Nigeria to be positive and take more positive actions than talking towards a greater future of our country.
On the recession, I believe in the law of gravity, if dollar likes let it go up to N1000. I believe when we begin to take the right actions, it will crash down to even N1 as President Muhammadu Buhari has predicted.”
