WARRI – Leaders of Ugbolokposo community in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State have called on the Federal Government to rename the Federal University of Petroleum Resources  (FUPRE) after Ugbolokposo, because the land on which the institute is built belongs to the Itsekiri community of Ugbolokposo.

In a statement by Osibakoro Otuedon, Johnson Maleghemi and Donald Iku in Warri Tuesday, they argued that Ugbomro was part of Ugbolokposoland: “The issue was finally laid to rest by the Supreme Court of Nigeria sitting at Abuja on Friday, July 18, 1997 in Suit No. S.C. 98/1993 in the case of Osibakoro D. Otuedon and another (for themselves and on behalf of Ugbolokposo people) [Plaintiffs/Appellant] and Ambrose Olughor and six others (for themselves and on behalf of Ugbomro village, and on behalf of Abadi and Ogbe families of Erovie quarters, Effurun) as defendants/respondents. It is reported in (1997) 7. S.C.N.J 411 particularly at 444 lines 33-40,” the release said.

It maintained that the communities clamouring for their names to be attached to FUPRE are aware of this judgment, which means that they have no lawful claim to the land in question.

“The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Federal Government, Delta State Government, Uvwie Local Government, the Uvwie traditional ruler, Traditional Council, the National Assembly, Delta State House of Assembly, National Universities Commission are aware of this Supreme Court Judgment. But if, due to inadvertence, their minds have not been averted to it, we hereby draw their attention to the said Supreme Court Judgment,” the community leaders said.

They concluded by stating that they hoped none of the agencies of government would be influenced, swayed and hoodwinked for any reason whatsoever. They also insisted that the institution should be properly addressed as Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Ugbolokposo, adding that, as Itsekiri people, they were peace-loving and hospitable and believe in peaceful co-existence with their neighbours.
