Four decomposing bodies were littering the Ndele-Emohua axis of the ever-busy East-West Road in Rivers State,on Friday, Independent has learnt.
It was gathered that the bodies suspected to be those of four armed robbers are releasing offensive odours into the community and creating fear of outbreak of an epidemic.
Some residents of Ndele claimed that the slain four bandits were allegedly killed in a gun battle with some unknown soldiers who were travelling on the road on Tuesday.
The hoodlums were said to be carrying out a robbery operation when the soldiers ran into them and shot them dead in a gun duel.
The soldiers, it was learnt, sped away after some of the robbers escaped into the near-by bush.
The stench-releasing bodies had been a common sight to traveler along the Ndele-Emohua area of the East-West Road since the incident.
An indigene of the community who identified himself simply as Prince said the shoot-out occurred when the soldiers travelling to an unknown destination were caught in a robbery operation by the armed robbers numbering 15.
He said the soldiers had pretended to be among the victims of the armed robbers and drove to the road block mounted by the armed robbers before opening fire on them.
“While others scampered to safety, the dead four robbers were not lucky,” he said.
Some travelers from Bayelsa who also confirmed the presence of decomposing corpses in Ndele area of the East-West Road said many drivers and passengers usually cover their noses to avoid the stench oozing from the smelly bodies.
“We call on the relevant authority to remove the corpses and save the community from the outbreak of diseases”, a traveler from Bayelsa said in an interview on Friday in Yenagoa.
