Nkerefi community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State is arguably one of the most neglected communities in the State.

The community lacks infrastructure like good road networks, portable water, electricity, good schools and other social amenities and even meaningful representation in Government.

It was against this backdrop that the joy of Nkerefi people knew no bounds when the new Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, appointed an indigene of the community, Mr. Gabriel Ajah as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) on June 11.

The joy of Nkerefi people was however caught short by the violence unleashed on the community precisely one month after the appointment of their son as SSG.

Last Saturday, July 11, the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe P. A. Onuoha and three other indigenes of the town were brutally killed by unidentified armed men.

It was gathered that the armed men had invaded Nkerefi with guns and machetes in the early hours of Saturday and attacked Igwe P.A. Onuoha , a couple-Ejike Udeme Uzor and Evelyn Udeme Uzor- and another native of the town identified as Daniel Ogbu, popularly known in the community as Choco.

Several others in the town reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries during the attack on the town.

Members of the community vigilante group said that while the attack lasted, gunshot sounds came from all directions, which made it very difficult for them to know the direction the invaders were coming from.

It was gathered that the armed invaders took advantage of the darkness that pervaded the community owing to lack of electricity to launch the attack.

Eye-witnesses who saw the corpses of the deceased said they were inflicted with several machete cuts.

It was gathered that after the shooting which was said to have lasted for about an hour the body of the traditional ruler was found lying lifeless in his palace while those of the three other victims were found in different locations in the community.

Although the Divisional Police Station in Nkanu East was said to have been alerted as soon as the invasion started, it was gathered that the police only arrived at the scene after the attack.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Enugu State Command, DSP Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the incident in a statement.

Amaraizu while describing the incident as unfortunate said the command would fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

“The command is working relentlessly to ensure that those behind the alleged murder are unmasked and brought to book. Full scale investigations have commenced into the incident as dead bodies of the deceased persons have been deposited at Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre Enugu and General Hospital Agbani respectively” he said.

Amaraizu disclosed that there is increased security surveillance in the area to avoid escalation of violence and further breakdown of law and order and to unmask the perpetrators.

The police spokesman added that “Our team of operatives are working round the clock to unmask those behind the killing at Nkerefi. Calm has returned to the area. The area is being monitored.”

The reason for the gruesome attack on the community was not known as at press time, although the youths were said to have clashed with the traditional ruler recently over his involvement in sacrifices, which the youths believed retarded the development of the community.

However, the Igwe had insisted that his involvement in the sacrifices was to protect his family and not to retard the development of youths of the community.
