Ideal Conceal, a U.S. company, has invented a gun that folds up to the approximate shape and size of a smartphone. The inventor says it is meant for people who want to carry a weapon without feeling awkward about it.

Speaking with NBC News, Kirk Kjellberg, the inventor, said he had the idea for Ideal Conceal after an incident in a restaurant. A young boy noticed the concealed weapon he was carrying, alerting his mother and drawing the attention of the entire restaurant. Because Kjellberg didn’t like that people were aware of his decision to carry a loaded firearm to a dinner he decided there had to be a better way. Thus, Ideal Conceal was born.

The gun, a derringer-style two shot .380 caliber pistol, is mostly plastic. The inner workings are metal, however, which Kjellberg notes is an important distinction, he has received a lot of criticism over the possibility of the gun being sneaked through metal detectors and security but he has defended the invention, saying there is too much metal in the gun to cheat metal detectors.

“It’s kind of an erroneous idea that this is any different from any other pistol, because when you run it through an x-ray, it has barrels and triggers and hammers, all the things other guns have. It has enough metal in it that it can’t escape the metal detector,” he said.

The company has announced a release date for “mid-2016” and will have a retail price of $395.
