Quarterfinal places again proved a hurdle too high for Nigerians at the Dayak Tennis Championship Wednesday with the nation’s trio of Albert Bikom, Mohammed Mohammed and Joseph Ubon crashing out of the ITF Pro Circuit tournament holding in Abuja.

Bikom, a surprise first round conqueror of South Africa’s Mark Van Wyk, lost 6-1, 6-0 to third seed, Nicolas Meister of the USA, while Mohammed, who defeated compatriot Henry Atseye in his previous tie also lost 6-1, 6-0 to Egypt’s Karim Mohamed Maamoun, the sixth seed. Ubon followed the footsteps of his countrymen losing 6-0, 6-4 to Takanyi Garaganga of Zimbabwe in the last singles tie of the day.

In other second round matches, top seed, David Perez Sanz of Spain beat American Zack McCourt 6-4, 7-6, while second seed, Mohamed Safwat endured a torrid afternoon before beating American Hunter Reese 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Serbian Ilija Vucic bowed 6-3, 6-4 to fourth-seeded Tucker Vorster of South Africa.

South African Nicolas Scholtz qualified for the quarterfinal with a 6-1, 6-1 crushing of Germany’s Pirmin Haenle, while Lenny Hampel of Austia survived the firepower of Adrian Andrzejczuk of Poland 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
