Tell us about yourself?

I’m Adebayo Adeleke, I’m from Osun State, Ede, my mum is straight American but knows Lagos more than I, and she can go to Ojuelegba and start driving. Some people think I’m a cocky guy. A lot of people don’t actually understand I’m a cool guy. I’m a nice guy, I like to have fun and I like to make music. The reason why people call me B Red is that in America, in my neighbourhood, they were not too light skinned people and mostly dark skinned people there, so when you are fair, they call you red.  They didn’t know my name as they were always calling me Red. So I was like let me just add B, the first letter of my name to Red which formed B Red.  .

How was your growing up like?

It was fun, been born in United States of America and brought back to Nigeria at the age of two by my parents.  I went back again; it was back and forth for me.  It was crazy for me I never thought I will be living in Nigeria. Coming back to Nigeria and blending was challenging.

When did you start music professionally?

I started two years ago. Some people just think my family has money, if I start telling you my story, you will be like Na Wah O, are you serious? When we first started, nobody believed in us in my family. The first question was how can you make it? After ‘Damiduro’ everybody started noticing us and were asking what is going on.

You will be dropping your latest single titled, ‘Cucumber’. What is ‘Cucumber’ all about?

It is about a girl that I like who doesn’t like me but only wants to date me and have sex meaning she only wants to keep cucumber. While for me I don’t want the one night stand thing. It’s a nice song, a party song and you’ll love it when it drops.

Did you write the song with the intention of featuring Akon?

I wrote it and did it alone, but after the ‘Meek Mill’ video with me and Davido in America, we went to Akon’s studio because Akon is on David’s album too. While at the studio, after Davido played his songs for him, I also played ‘Cucumber.’ Akon requested that I play it again. Even Davido and his manager were surprised. Akon made me play it for him like four times. He fell in love with the jam and said I should leave it with him and the next day, I collected it. Normally, you have to pay for something like this, but I got it for free. It is the grace of God.

So, is this your biggest song yet?

Of course! It’s my first international collabo.

How do you feel about it?

I’m happy and thanking God. Akon is a legend and I love him, it’s only a few people that have done  collabo with Akon in Nigeria, P Square, Dbanj, Wizkid, Tuface, Davido and me..

What’s delaying the release of the song?

I want to release both audio and video at the same time.

Seems you like taking your time before you drop singles?

Yes, it’s not good; don’t let me say what I’m not supposed to say so that no artiste will feel bad. I don’t believe in dropping singles back to back. Even if you push it to the hardest it’s not everybody that will hear it and rush. It’s not about dropping songs but about knowing what you are doing.  Like me, I have dropped five singles and its only two that people know.

Are you planning on dropping an album?

Not yet, I’m still building my fan base.

Davido has graduated from school, what are your own plans?

I stopped school for a while; I have two more years to go and I’m going back to school by September. I had to stop to do music and get my name out there but I’m going back this September. As soon as I graduate, I’ll start working in my father’s power plant. I don’t want to say the school but it is in Lagos, a private school and its close to the Island, the course is Mass Communication.

Won’t working in your father’s plant affect your show business?

Not at all, even Davido wants to start working in the power plant. My Chairman also, CEO of HKN owns a power plant that his father gave to him. He goes to Ondo from Monday to Friday. I can do any other job with music. My uncle is the first governor of Osun state, now he is a Senator, I could go into politics if I want. It is by what God leads me to.

Have you considered acting?

Of course, I would love that. Honestly, I really want to act please come and call me, I love acting.

Will you say you are living up to fulfillment, musically?

Not how I want to be, everybody has stages in life. I think I’m doing well for myself.  I get shows; I do like four shows in a month so I’m okay. The last video I dropped has 750,000 views and now I have a song with Akon which I didn’t pay him to be on.

Some might be of the opinion that you paid Akon to feature in your song?

Funny enough from Damiduro, Akon never charged us, Akon’s brother manages Chris Brown. Let me tell you a funny story so you will know how happy I am to have Akon feature in my song.  We see Akon down town all the time, David and I will be scared to talk to Akon and his brother.  More than four years, we could not get signed to them that is why having him now is bursting my head.  You won’t understand. I said my girlfriend broke up with me because I didn’t have a job, now she is writing every time. I remember one time her mum was shopping  and then she called that she should give me the phone that Akon is in the mall  that I should come and we went there and he did shakara for us. People take Akon for granted but he is big .

Why did you choose music?

It is because I love music

What makes you different from the others?

I’m different because I’m fair; every single song I drop is different and sounds different.

How do you get inspiration?

I havwe beats in my head. People around me are artistes so I get inspired from them. Let me tell you no matter what anybody tells you, you can’t do it by yourself.

Who are your favourite artistes?

I like Chidinma , Sheyi Shey, Skales, Wiz Kid and I have a lot of friends.

Can you date Chidinma?

No. Why? I just like her music that’s all.

Some people say you are doing music to compete with Davido?

How can I compete with family, that’s crazy? That’s the devil’s work if you want to compete with a member of your family?  In every group, one person will blow before the others. Just like in the defunct Mo’Hits, it was D’Banj that first blew before Wande, D’Prince and the rest. My time will come sooner.

Won’t people also think you are riding on Davido’s wings?

We have been there together  hustling before the fame and glamour,  Davido, I and one Jamaican guy used to go sell CDS in America and make money. Though our family had money we had to hustle on our own to survive.

When my uncle sent police to chase us out of hotels and not to go to shows since the age of two we have been together. I feel I’m number one because he is number one and I feel happy when I see him holding many wards.

What will you say you have done so far to help people?

That’s a very good question, if you see me in my red car you will know I’m dropping bar (money). We all  do it in our family, from my dad to my uncle to my Davido , see if I go out with N50.000 when I return, I will have N10.000 left with me . There were times in school in America when I will have zero naira so I know how it feels like not to have money.  Even if I don’t get to the less privileged I still help the people around.

Any plan of establishing a foundation?

Not yet. I can do it but I’m not focused on that yet.

Basically what is the next stage for B-Red?

It is God that will decide that, I’m only placing my life in God’s hands.
