A big crack has emerged within the ranks of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the current probe into the misapplication of funds meant for arms purchase under the last administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan has handled by his National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki.
Since the commencement of the probe into the disbursement of the fund running into billion of US Dollars, a number of high profile members of the PDP have been picked up for questioning by the anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Latest among the PDP stalwarts to be caught in the web was the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh who was picked up and has been incarcerated by EFCC since last Tuesday.
The party leaders sang discordant tunes on the issue on Monday when the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP,  Abdullahi Jalo said it was wrong of the party to get involved in attenpts at rescuing party members allegedly caught in the web of the “armsgate” as they didn’t obtain the money from the former NSA on behalf of the party.
Jalo at an interactive session with some newsmen at the party’s secretariat also said it is wrong for anyone to try to use former president Goodluck Jonathan as an alibi in seeking an explanation on why the money meant for arms purchase was diverted to politicking instead.
He opined that it may have become necessary for the former president to come out clean on whether he actually directed the disbursement of the funds meant for arms purchase to fight the insurgents.
Jalo said the public shouldn’t misunderstand the issues explaining that. Individual members of the party who are being investigated for involvement in the shady deals accessed public funds through their various private companies and not for the PDP even though they are members of the party.
According to him the Arms fund was an appropriation of the National Assembly to which the former President and Former National Security Adviser, Dasuki Sambo were aware of; and knew  the limit of using the funds other than what it was meant for.
Jalo said the money for campaigns was raised at the Dinner held at the banquet Hall of the villa where supporters of the party made various donations.
He maintained that that fund was different from the Arms fund and those who collected the Arms fund did so at their own risks and should be treated as individuals rather than rubbing it off on the party.
He said any member of the party who wishes to go and bail any officer of the party would be doing so on his own individual capacity not on behalf of the party even as he demanded those who collected money to prove that the money was spent on the party.
In his words: “Darkness has now come to light, that some people have collected money, Not just PDP we are talking of all those that have collected money from an act of the National assembly and taken under the guise of campaigning for Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
“Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is alive, has he ever directed that money for arms should be disbursed for his campaign? No one is a fool, it is known to us that money meant for campaigns were given to chairmen of various political party.
“Billions were collected at the Banquet hall at the Dinner, that money was meant for the campaign. The theme of that dinner was to raise money for that purpose Dangote donated, Otetola donated.
“Olisa Metuh had a company, Dextra Investment Limited, what does that have to do with PDP
“Let us put the records straight let any of them make their claims of spending the money on PDP.
“Diversion of funds on the Act of the National Assembly is a criminal offence.
“PDP has no business with individuals who used their personal companies to get these monies. They should explain themselves and if they spent the money on PDP, they should prove it, Jalo demanded
Jalo also stated that the party need to be careful of what it does now as it does not have a National Chairman or Acting National Chairman, as according to his words, “the court has rightly removed Prince Uche Secondus as the acting National Chairman “.
However, the National Legal Adviser of the party has faulted the claims of Jalo, as said the position canvassed by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary does not represent the thinking and opinion of the rest members of the PDP NWC.
He pointed out that the National Working Committee,NWC was yet to meet over the “Dasukigate” since it started   as the Party had been on recesses since last December.
He also faulted the claim by Jalo that the court has effectively removed Secondus from office as Acting National Chairman.
In a statement issued late on Monday, in response to Jalo’s opinion on the arrest of Metuh and other party members by the EFCC, Barrister Kwon said “party maintains that it is not opposed to the fight against corruption but the fight must be holistic and within the confines of the constitution of the country.
“Suspects cannot be locked up indefinitely without being charged to court or released on bail, especially when courts of competent jurisdiction abound within the area of arrest and detention”.
On the position of the Acting National Chairman raised by Jalo,he said that ” the party has duly lodged an appeal against the decision of the High Court of the FCT as well as filing application for Injunction Pending Appeal and Stay of Execution”.
” These processes are within the rights of the party since the FCT High Court is not the ultimate court on the matter. Until the application is determined, it is not correct to say the party has no Acting National Chairman”,he declared.
