Minister of Sports, Tammy Danagogo, on Sunday eulogised Senator Uche Chukwumerije, describing him as a pillar of taekwondo in Nigeria, a statesman and sportsman.

The minister made this declaration at the late home of the late senator in Abuja, where he went to pay a condolence visit to the family.

He said, “We saw him as one of the pillars of taekwondo in Nigeria.”

Chukwumerije, a black belt, was the father of Olympic bronze medallist, Chika Chukwumerije. He died on April 19, at the age of 75.

In his response, the first son of the late senator, Chidi, thanked the minister for his visit, noting that his father was an ardent sportsman who still jogged regularly in his 70s.

He said, “My father started as a tennis player, ran the marathon and was involved in swimming and taekwondo came much later.

“We are glad that during his lifetime, he saw the seed he sowed in taekwondo yield fruit, when Chika won an Olympic medal.

“We are inviting all the people who appreciated him and feel the pains of his loss with us to join us in giving him a befitting burial on May 22.”
