Daily Independent Photo-Journalist Wins Quill Award

It was a night of celebration as Adekunle Ajayi, a photo journalist with Daily Independent emerged winner for the best Photo Story in this year’s edition of Promasidor Quill Awards for Journalists. The award which was held at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers Lagos saw Ajayi’s entry; Dancer at Sango Festival stood out when compared with those submitted by other nominees. Speaking at the event, the chairman of the panel of judges for this year’s edition, Ambassador Patrick Cole, described the entry as exceptional relative to those put in by other nominees.

The overall winner of the awards however went to a correspondent of The Nation newspaper, Mr. Taiwo  Alimi, who submitted an entry titled “Where The Blind Dare to Dream” while the award for the best report on children was won by a correspondent of The Punch, Mr. Toluwani  Eniola.

Aside winning the overall trophy, Alimi also clinched the category award for the Best Report on education while another correspondent from the Guardian Newspaper, Gbenga Salau smiled home by carting away two awards. Salau emerged winners in both the Brand Advocate of the Year category and Best report on Nutrition category. Other awardees include Seun  Akioye who won The CSR and Industry Report Category and Gilbert Alasa also of The Nation, who won The Future Writer of the Year Award. Commenting on the awards, the Managing Director, Promasidor Nigeria Limited, Oliver Thiry, commended journalists who submitted entries for the different categories of the awards acknowledging that the job of journalists was quite painstaking saying there is no reward that can adequately compensate the effort.

Ajayi who received a high end camera for his excellent performance commended the organization for the initiative stating that such reward would remain a motivating factor.

Apart from the high end lap-top and company’s product that were  given to the winners , Thiry disclosed that the overall winner will be sent to London for an all expense paid four week multimedia journalism training course with Thomson Foundation. He added that the overall winner will also be placed on a week’s job placement with a prominent British national news organization.
