The hijacking that diverted an EgyptAir flight to Cyprus and threatened passenger lives, it turns out is a desperate move of a man to contact his cypriot ex-wife.

The plane took off from Alexandria, it was hijacked and landed at Larnaca. The hijacker, who said he was strapped with explosives, has been identified as Ibrahim Samaha, 59.

Samaha is a professor at a University in Alexandria and authorities said he demanded to deliver a letter to his Cypriot former wife, Marina Paraschou with whom he has four children.

The woman who is a resident of Oroklini, Cyprus was transferred to the Larnaca airport to meet her former husband.

All passengers and crew have been freed and the hijacker is on his own on the plane according to local media reports.

Although the incident initially alerted authorities fearing a terrorism act it turns the ex-wife was the key for ending this.
