No fewer than four personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) were injured in a shootout with suspected smugglers who tried to prevent their raid on a warehouse suspected to house contrabands in Ilashe Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The injured NCS personnel are currently hospitalised while at least four of the suspected smugglers have been apprehended.

It was gathered that the incident occurred when some customs officials stormed the warehouse and broke into it to evacuate bags of rice suspected to have been smuggled into the country from Republic of Benin.

According to Independent sources, some suspected hoodlums in the area resisted the attempts by the NSC to evacuate the bags of rice, which resulted in a shootout between the Customs and hoodlums.

According to the source, the hoodlums overpowered the Customs officers  and confiscated some of their guns, even as some of the customs personnel fled the scene.

It was however gathered that the gun taken from the Customs were later recovered packed in a sack, and dumped at the premises of the palace of a traditional ruler in the area, who handed them over to the customs.

The Customs Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abubakar Uthman who confirmed the incident said that 11 motorcycles and 250 bags of smuggled rice were impounded by operatives.

He added that three suspected smugglers have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Customs officers.

The PRO added that the arrested suspects have been handed over to police for discreet investigation and prosecution.
