Customs Seize Contraband At Seme, Earn N7.7m Revenue In August

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme-Badagry area command has said that it seized 20 contraband and other dutiable goods which the owners wanted to smuggle into the country and evade duties on them.

Public Relation Officer of the command, Taupyen S.K.  said that the  seized goods had Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N17,194,215. He further revealed that the command generated N777, 230,419.99 as revenue to the Federal Government, also in August 2015.

He listed the seized items to include bags of rice, frozen poultry products, vegetable oil, vehicles among others. He noted that in  compliance with the headquarters  directives dated 03rd  July,2015, on the enforcement of total ban on importation of poultry product into Nigeria; “it is worthy of note that Seme area command complied with this directives  by launching  “Operation Hawk Descend” on the 7th of July, 2015.

“The Area command has been able to achieve a remarkable success in the enforcement of this onerous task, as the smuggling of poultry product through illegal routes of Seme has been contained with and drastically suppressed. Worthy of commendation is also a note of appreciation from the leadership of the poultry Association of Nigeria and the entire Nigeria poultry farmers to the Customs Area Controller and the officers of his command for the excellent and outstanding performance through various on slaughters of the smuggled poultry products into the country. The Area Controller Alhaji Ndalati, G.M made this observation when destroying some of the poultry product seized that was concealed in various forms to evade officers on duty. He further stressed that smugglers of poultry products should find genuine and alternative ways of doing business as the tempo of ” zero tolerance to smuggling of poultry products” will be sustained in the command”.

Speaking about the achievements of the command since the beginning of the year, the CPPRO  said  that Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service generated N6, 223,862,657.56 from January to August, 2015. “The Command also made 461 seizures with a duty paid value (DPV) of N170, 984,589.00 during the same period under review. The item seized within the period ranges from general goods, rice and vegetable oil. 1,680 cartons of frozen poultry products with duty paid value (DPV) of N57, 735,926.00 were also seized and destroyed for the period under review.
