Excellence is never an accident; it is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. The secret joy of work is contained in one word – Excellence. Of a truth, the young and old thespians of Crown Troupe of Africa have found that secret joy of work and have thus attained excellence.

Knowledge doesn’t come with age – it comes with your pursuit of excellence. Quite fortunately, Crown Troupe of Africa in its 19th year of creative excellence has pursued excellence and attained the kind of knowledge of theatre that most troupes as a body never attain.

In recent years, for those who have followed the trajectory of Crown Troupe’s 19 years of creative outbursts, they would attest to the fact that theirs is indeed a unique existence. Thus, in celebration of their 19year existence, Crown Troupe has put together a special potpourri of creative theatre for their ever ready audience.

Asides other shows and performances being put together for the anniversary, the ever dynamic Segun Adefila – lead masquerade of Crown Troupe himself – has packaged what he simply titled ‘Orisirisi’ meaning variety. While Crown Troupe’s version of theatre is what some would call eclectic, it is a true representation of all aspects of the arts, bending ancient rules of theatre to their will brazenly and masterfully.

For many who have enjoyed the Adefila-led Troupe’s brand of theatre, they would know that truly in the display of their fresh kind of theatre, Crown Troupe never considers any issue too sacred to be brought to the stage. They manage to consistently shock the sensibilities of denizens of the theatre who constantly fill the audience.

Those who are blessed with the most talent don’t necessarily outperform everyone else. It’s the people with follow-through who excel.  It would be remembered that some weeks back, the troupe staged Ahmed Yerima’s ‘Hard Ground’ at the Lekki Waterside Theatre. In the hands of a lesser director, the staging of ‘Hard Ground’ in Crown Troupe’s style of theatre could have been a disaster. However, with Segun Adefila’s dexterous directing, it was quite the show. The dreadlocked thespian stretched the borders of acceptable theatre employing elements unexpected in a traditional stage setting. Expectedly, like a well-oiled machine, the play was a success.

Asides their laudable theatre exploits, Crown Troupe recently showcased their unique talents at the just concluded comedy show by Yaw and Okey Bakassi titled ‘You’. While Yaw and Okey Bakassi supplied their explosive comedy, Crown Troupe bettered the show with the theatrics and drama that made it a one of a kind comedy expression.

For the 19th anniversary, ‘Orisirisi’ will be brought to the stage at Lekki Waterside Theatre all Sundays in the month of June with two shows at 3pm and 6pm each day.

In the lively performance, no topic is considered sacred or too sensitive to be discussed as they move from one happenchance to another quirk of the Nigerian life, stating the realities as they appear. The show is simply a roller–coaster of activities like the true Nigerian existence.

‘Orisirisi’ takes us through the many trials and travails of the regular Nigerian while actors on stage slammed the audience’s sensibilities flagrantly with the veracities of a faulty society.

Satirically, this troupe of troubadours picks out the masked flaws in society, unveiling the true faces of these vices. Taking the audience further, Oriade’s (Adefila) disciples aptly re-enact salient aspects of man’s existence, employing dance, music, drama, poetry and diverse arts.

Like scholars on a pedagogic mission, Crown Troupe do not just state the problems, they proffer meaningful solutions to pointed problems without distracting the audience from the entertainment aspect. Consequently, the audience is taken through the rigmarole of statement of the problem, but is allowed the luxury of drawing its own conclusions.

Needless to say that Crown Troupe constantly sets the pace in the delivery of its animatedly adroit kind of theatre. Some who have no inkling as to why the name Crown Troupe has become a constant on the theatre scene over the years need only to travel back 19 years; the point where it all began.

While it may appear today that their fame is an express acknowledgement of the talents to be found in the troupe, those who indeed know would realise that this is not just an encomium for talents found in Crown Troupe, but recognition of the hard work that goes into the honing of that talent. Talent alone is never enough. If it were, many today would be famous and successful.

Of course, denizens of the theatre who have yet to experience Crown Troupe theatre need only watch out for the latest exploits of these actors who inconceivably deviate from the norm and birth something new, unique, and wondrous that is both pedagogic and entertaining without being patronizing.  They test limits never before tested, make new rules and create spectacles that can truly be called creative. Theirs isn’t just theatre, it is an all-encompassing art, and for the past 19 years, they have stayed true to their cause

The purpose of man is his excellence through sweat. The greatness of man is his defiance against all evil; coping with all the bitterness, hardships and obstacles that are the very nature of life, never surrendering. Crown Troupe in becoming a go-to name in the theatre scene having achieved excellence, and one can only wait with bated breath for the more that is sure to come after these eventful 19 years.
