Abuja – Consumer Protection Council [CPC] has urged the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola to address the nagging issue of outrageous estimated billing system by electricity Distribution Companies[DISCOs ]to Nigerian consumers.

Director General of CPC, Dupe Atoki, who made the call on Tuesday when she paid a courtesy visit on the Minister in his office in Abuja, said many Nigerian electricity consumers have been groaning under the outrageous billing system of DISCOs which is not commensurate with the power they supply.

Atoki also said due to infrastructural deficit, the DISCOs have made electricity consumers to pay for the purchase of transformers, metres, cables, outside of their obligations.

She lamented that despite measures put in place by the nation’s electricity regulators to ensure effective service delivery that CPC has continued to receive barrage of complaints from operators in the sector.

She said some of the complaints received daily by the Council include non-metering of consumers, which results in estimated and arbitrary billing of a huge consumer population, non-supply of infrastructure requirements such as metres, transformers, electric poles and cables to some business units, thereby compelling consumers to pay for same without reimbursement.
