Court Remands Wanderer Over Theft Of Apples

Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Nasarawa State has ordered the remand of a 20-year-old vagrant, Chita Ugochukwu, in prison custody till July 2 for allegedly stealing 54 pieces of apples.

The accused, who resides at Kado Village, Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count charge of theft.

He pleaded guilty and pleaded for leniency “I stole the apples because I don’t have money to feed myself since I came back from the village.

“I pray the court to have mercy on me; I will never steal again as I have learnt my lesson,’’ the accused told the court. The presiding judge, Mr Albert Maga, gave the order after listening to an oral application made by the prosecutor not to grant the accused bail as he might abscond before the next adjourned date.

“You are to be remanded in Keffi Prison till July 2 for ruling,’’ Maga said.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Friday Adaji, had told the court that one Monday Ifeanyi of Kapada Market Mararaba, lodged a report against the suspect at the ‘A’ Division Police Station on June 27. Adaji said that on the same date, at about 6.32 p.m. the accused stole 54 pieces of apples valued at N3,600 from the complainant. He said that Ugochukwu also confessed during police investigation that he stole the complainant’s apples about two times before he was caught. Adaji said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
