Following the recent donation of a land to build its corporate headquarters in Owerri by the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), may soon abandon its rented office in Lagos for the heartland of Eastern region.

However, even as it remains a pledge for now, dissenting voices are already trailing the gesture as some of its members argue that it will be wrong to situate the headquarters of the society outside Lagos or Abuja.

‘’COSON is a national institution that cannot be moved from the country’s capital or commercial nerve center. I welcome the governor’s promise to support us in many ways but if that of a land comes true, it can be developed for commercial purpose and regional office but not as headquarters,’’ one of its strong members said under anonymity.

Others however described the argument as baseless saying that it will be the best thing that will happen to the copyright warlords. ‘’The base of our headquarters does not matter because COSON will remain the same if it operates from Lokoja or Maiduguri. What matters is for it to continue to make the same impact for the progress of the industry and its members,’’ the asserted.

Okorocha, while making the pledge, had observed that ‘’music has left America and London and is back to Nigeria now. So, this is the finest moment to make use of this special product.’’

He added that, ‘’The Imo State government will provide a land for you to build a befitting headquarters in the state because Imo State has everything necessary for the the industry’s success.’’

While the divided opinions on what to use the ‘promised land’ for rage, there’s has not been any official statement from the Tony Okoroji-powered body so far. But an insider confided that ‘’nobody is thinking about that right now.’’
