Cleric, Two Others, Imprisoned For Fraud

A 32-year old pastor and two others were on Tuesday sentenced to eight months imprisonment by an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for impersonating a member of staff of Nigeria National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC)  and  for defrauding a woman to a tune of N1,012, 750,000. 

The accused, Apostle King Moses, Evelyn Otuuchukwu, 52 and Peter Effiong, 52, all from Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, pleaded guilty to the 3-count charge of joint act, false impersonation and cheating, offenses that contradict sections 79, 179 and 321 of the Penal Code Law.

The Police Prosecutor, Lukas Ephraim told the court that the complainant, Richie Kennet, of Arab road, Kubwa, Manager of Dominion Resort Limited, via a criminal complaint to the court, dated June 18, reported at the Kubwa police station of how the accused, paraded themselves to be staff of the NNPC.

He said the accused fraudulently deceived the complainant together with the management of the said hotel into giving them accommodation for five months at the rate of N5,000 per day, all amounting to N112,750,000, which they failed to pay.

In his ruling, the Judge, Mohammed Marafa sentenced them to eight months imprisonment with an option of N25, 000 fine each. They were also asked to pay a compensation fee of N112, 750,000, with additional  N337, 553.43 each.
