Enugu State Government has summoned the President General of Okpuje Town Union in the Nsukka Local Government area, Mr. Emmanuel Ugwoke, to appear in Government House, Enugu, to explain why he refused to welcome the Governor when he (Governor) visited the community. Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Emeka Abugu, issued the summons to the town union boss in Okpuje during the coronation of Igwe Oliver Ayogu as the new traditional ruler of the community.

Ayogu succeeds Igwe Chukwuma Ugwu who died in 1998.

Abugu, who represented the Governor Sullivan Chime at the ceremony, said the refusal of Ugwoke to come to the venue, to welcome the Governor’s representative showed that he has no respect for the Governor of the state.

“AS representative of the Governor, I herby summon the PG (president general) to Enugu Government House to explain why he shunned the Governor by refusing to welcome him in his community.

“His refusal to attend the coronation is a mark of disrespect to the Governor of the state who approved him as the PG of the Okpuje community,” Abugu said.

“The traditional ruler is the custodian of people’s customs, culture and traditions. It is unfair and unacceptable for town union PG to place himself above the traditional ruler.

“By law the traditional ruler is the first citizen of the community, but will work cordially with town executives and other relevant community stakeholders so as to fast track the development of the community,” Abugu said.

The commissioner, however, urged the newly installed traditional ruler to ensure he carried everybody along as well as extend hands of fellowship to those who contested for the throne with him to move the community forward.

“Your first assignment is to ensure you reconcile with all aggrieved persons in the community.

“You are the father and they are your sons and daughters. Ensure you rule with fear of God so as to dispense justice to the people,” Abugu said.

In an acceptance speech after receiving the staff of office from the government, the newly installed traditional ruler pledged to carry everybody along as well as reconcile with all aggrieved persons to move the community forward.

“I will rule with the fare of God by being fair to all and sundry. I have forgiven everybody that offended me, so also I ask for forgivingness from all I have offended.

“I hereby extend hands of fellowship to all, including the PG who did not attend this coronation.  “I am happy other executive members of Okpuje town union are here,” he said.

Efforts to get comments from Ugwoke on why he did not attend the ceremony proved abortive, as he did not pick calls to his mobile phone.

However, Secretary General of the Okpuje town union, Mr. Godwin Ogbuka, said all the executives of the union attended the coronation except the PG.
