Super Eagles will begin its quest for a second appearance at the 2016 African Nations Championship [CHAN] in Rwanda against the Stallions of Burkina Faso.

The draw held at the CAF headquarters on Sunday pit Nigeria against Burkina Faso in the first round of the qualifiers.

CAF explained that “the draw was done based on the zonal representation of the National Associations affiliated.”

Nigeria is one of the three seeded countries in Zone B of the qualification alongside Ghana and Niger Republic, while Burkina Faso, Cote d’ Ivoire and Togo were unseeded.

The first leg between the Super Eagles and Burkina Faso will hold in Nigeria on the weekend of October 16, 17 or 18 this year, while Burkina Faso will host Nigeria two weeks later.

The tournament is for players playing in their country’s domestic league and 42 teams will take part in the qualification for the 2016 edition that will produce 15 qualifiers.

Other pairings include Ghana and Cote d’ Ivoire, Tanzania and Uganda, Ethiopia against Kenya, and South Africa and Mauritius.

CHAN is the brainchild of CAF President Issa Hayatou, who believed a tournament was needed to offer stay-at-home stars national team exposure.

While Egypt won a record three consecutive Cup of Nations titles from 2006 with a predominantly local squad, most African countries rely heavily on players playing abroad.

Egypt has been absentees from the three previous CHAN tournaments won by DR Congo, Tunisia and Libya.

Algeria, Cape Verde Islands and Equatorial Guinea are other top-20 ranked countries that did not register for the 2016 qualifiers.

Qualifying begins in mid-June, ends in late October, and the tournament will be staged between January 16 and February 7 in capital city Kigali, Huye and Rubavu.
