Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Dim, a Catholic priest and the Rector, Tansi Major Seminary, Onitsha, have been kidnapped while his two other companion priests, Rev. Frs. Jude Chukwuneke and Jude Ezeokana were seriously injured while trying to escape the kidnappers’ terror.

This happened on September 26, 2016 about 7 p.m. along Nkpologwu/Nimbo Road in Enugu State. The kidnappers were believed to be Fulani herdsmen.

In a release issued by Rev. Fr. Hygi Aghaulor, the Director of Communication of Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, the priests were said to be returning from Nsukka to Onitsha and Nnewi respectively after a condolence visit to their colleague, Rev. Fr. Uchenna Eze of Nsukka Diocese when they ran into the herdsmen.

Independent learnt that as soon as they perceived danger ahead, Rev. Fr. Chkwuneke who was driving the car in which the three were traveling tried to escape with reverse gear but couldn’t go far before the car ran into a ditch.

Fr. Ezeokana jumped out of the car and got severely bruised. As the herdsmen got to the car, they shot the driver, Fr. Chukwuneke on the head and dragged Fr. Dim to an unknown place leaving Frs. Ezeokana and Chukwuneke who were covered with blood from the bruises and gunshot wounds.

Both were then taken to hospitals in Nsukka but have now been relocated to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

As at the time of filling this report, according to Rev. Fr. Aghaulor, the kidnappers had demanded for N2.5 million ransom.

But Aghaulor in a telephone interview urged the Federal Government and security agencies to secure the release of Rev. Fr. Dim because, according to him, the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has a standing rule that Dioceses should not pay ransom for any kidnapped priest.

Aghaulor recalled that the same day, and in a separate incident a Vincentine Priest was also kidnapped with his brother along Abuja-Lokoja Expressway.

Also recalling several other incidents of kidnap and insecurity in the country, Fr. Aghaulor wondered whether the Federal Government is overwhelmed by the security situation in the country.

“Why the killings and continuous raping of women by these herdsmen? We are asking the government , for how long would this continue? Is this the type of country we all signed up for? Is it part of the change?” he queried.
