Mfon Udoh, the Enyimba striker, who has scored seven goals in the 2016 CAF Champions League, has said his main target is to win the trophy with the former champions as against emerging the competition’s top scorer.
Udoh said much as he would cherish ending the League as the top scorer, his ultimate desire will be to see the Nigerian side win at the end of the day, assuring that his goals will not stop coming.
“I’m not really particular about winning the individual award but for us to end the competition as African Champions,” he said when asked on Wednesday of his main objective as the competition progresses.
“To me, I will be very happy if we win the competition again and emulate the 2003 and 2004 sets. That will give me more joy than ending the competition as top scorer and being knocked out along the road. But first let us finish the job against Etoile du Sahel,” he said.
It will be recalled that Enyimba and Nigerian Stephen Worgu scored 13 goals in the 2008 CAF Champions League en route to the Nigerian Champion’s elimination at the semi final by Egyptian Al-Ahly.
Also, Enyimba and Ghananian Joetex Frimpong netted 12 times in 2003 as the Peoples Elephant broke the then 38-year old jinx of winning the trophy for Nigeria for the first time.
So it is obvious that based on Udoh’s calmness in front of goals, he may end up writing his name among the tournament’s all-time top scorers, having already netted seven times in five matches.
