Ahead of Wednesday’s second round, second leg of the CAF Champions League against home side, Etoile du Sahel in Sousse, Tunisia, Enyimba has been warned to keep it tight at both the middle and the back.
Former captain of the seven-time Nigerian champions, Obinna Nwaneri, was quoted as saying that his former club should approach the match as if it lost the game at home, saying Etoile can be dangerous at home.
“I really thank God for what Enyimba achieved in the first leg,” he said. “The pressure will be on Etoile but Enyimba should watch it; they are one side I know very well with their trickery. Besides, they can be very dangerous before their home fans.
“I think Enyimba should make sure the midfielders and the defenders are at their best to cut short the opponents, who will likely throw everything at them.
“Their plan will be to score quickly and then shift the pressure on Enyimba, but one good thing is that Enyimba is not new to such challenges. When we confronted them in Abuja in the 2004 final, I can still remember the pressure they put us through, but I know Enyimba is very much in a position to go through,” he said.
Nwaneri was among Enyimba’s golden generation, who won the Africa’s premier club title back-to-back in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
Romanus Orjinta captained the team in 2003, while Nwaneri was the skipper in 2004 when Enyimba became only the second side to successfully defend the CAF Champions League title after TP Mazembe initially achieved the feat in 1967 and 1968.
