Why Burundi’s President Is Going For Third Term

Burundi’s Pierre Nkurunziza, a former rebel leader, on
Thursday, May 7, 2015, ruled out fourth term bid in offce,
as the country’s constitutional court had ruled that he can
run for a third term in June’s general elections.

The ruling came after the court’s vice-president, Sylvere

Nimpagaritse, fled Burundi, saying the court had been under
pressure to endorse Nkurunziza’s re-election bid.

But the president’s spokesman, Gervais Abayeho, denied
that judges were threatened or pressured.

Under the constitution, presidents can only be elected to
two terms in office but it was argued that his first term
does not count as he was appointed by parliament.

The president has been in power since 2005.
