Early Wednesday morning, thespian Omobukola Ajayi, popularly known as Bukky Ajayi, died in her home in Lagos.

Though the family is yet to release the cause of death, close source to the family said she had been suffering from complications of diabetes which she has lived with for a long time.

The actress had been off the screens for a long time, but earlier this year, the public got to see her once again as she came in a wheel chair to receive a Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), which held in March.

As if she had prior knowledge of her impending death and had known that the award was her last public appearance, she made this statement: “If I have offended anyone, they should please forgive me and if you think you have offended me you are forgiven.”

She also spoke a bit about her waning health. “I hope I can stand up but if I do that I will fall down,” she said while receiving the award on a wheelchair.

Prior to the awards, she had celebrated her 82 birthday with her family in her Lagos home.

The actress had been buried at the Atan Cemetery in Lagos, according to Islamic rites.

Colleagues and celebrities have continued to send in their condolences for the late actress.

Independent also spoke with other actors on the death of their colleague.

The president of Actors’ Guild, Ibinabo Fiberesima, said “on behalf of the National Executive Committee and the entire members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, I commiserate with the family of the late veteran actress and member, Bukky Zainab Ajayi, who passed onto eternal glory today (Wednesday). She will be fondly remembered for her contributions and motherly counsels to the development and welfare of the members of our noble Guild in particular and the society in general.”

“She lived an exemplary life of a pious and devout Muslim and we pray Almighty Allah will grant her gentle soul eternal rest in peace and give the family and her loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“Actors Guild of Nigeria has declared two days of national mourning to pray and celebrate the life and times of our dearest Late Mummy Bukky”, she said.

Also giving his respect is musician, Jazzman Olofin, who is also an in-law to the late actress.

“My grandmother in-law is gone. The impeccable hardworking gorgeous veteran actress, Mama Bukky Ajayi, has left us. She has been there for me in wonderful ways at most crucial times. We’ll miss her a lot. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”

The family promises to make public other arrangements for her rites.
